Stunning Vintage for the Summer!

4 Tips for Finding High-Quality Vintage That Lasts

Whether you're browsing the racks at Savile or hitting up your local vintage spot, knowing how to spot well-made pieces can turn a fun afternoon into a true style score. Our vintage vendors are already curating the gems—but here’s how to train your eye for the really good stuff:

1. Look at the Label (But Not Just the Brand)

At Savile, many of our pieces are Canadian- or European-made, which often means better construction and unique design details. When you're thrifting:

  • Watch for “Made in Canada/USA/Europe” tags.

  • Seek out natural fibres like wool, silk, linen, or cotton—they age beautifully.

  • Don’t overlook unfamiliar labels. Many hidden gems come from smaller designers or past collections.

It feels good to shop in a way that steps away from fast fashion. I love the unique style that comes from reimagining pieces from the past with a fresh perspective. There’s something special about blending old and new—whether it’s in my wardrobe or my home—telling stories through style, one piece at a time.

2. Peek Inside for the Details

A high-quality garment will tell you a lot when you turn it inside out:

  • Look for clean, sturdy stitching—no loose threads or warped seams.

  • A lined dress or jacket usually signals a well-made piece.

  • Check that zippers work smoothly and buttons are secure (but also easy to replace if you love the piece!).

3. Feel the Fabric, Read the Colour

Before you fall for the print, check the feel:

  • Good fabric has weight, texture, and integrity.

  • Run your hands along it. If it feels flimsy or itchy, it probably won’t last.

  • Hold it up to natural light—look for fading, stains, or pilling, especially in knits.

4. Go with Your Gut (and Your Wardrobe)

Vintage is all about personality. At Savile, our vendors curate pieces with character—but it still has to feel like you.

  • Ask: Would I wear this next week? Can I style it three ways?

  • Bonus points if it makes you smile the second you see it.

  • Wear it! Don’t apologise for wearing something fabulous every day.

Want to shop vintage without the overwhelm? Our collaborators and Savile Members do the hard part—curating quality, character, and one-of-a-kind style you won’t find anywhere else.
